poor reception I have had my etrex vista for three years now. The reception is extremely poor in any wooded area. Even if I could get reception, if there is sun light you can not read the display. If there is a clearing it works fine. Otherwise, it loses the signal and is not useful. Also, it have sent back to garmin twice, once within Warranty and the same issue the screen failed 6 months later. The cost out of warranty was 3/4 of a new garmin. I have found reading other people's reviews this is a common problem. In summary, save your money and buy another brand with a better antenna.
GPS The eTrex Vista is easy to understand and use. I used the Vista recently on a hunting trip in Kodiak Alaska. The terrain was rugged and the weather cold and damp. The Vista operated flawlessly. Although on numerous ocassions, forest cover prevented satellite reception, I was able to get my bearings in the few clear areas and pieced together tracks that gave me the confidence of knowing my position and returning to the cabin.
Horrible in the woods I purchased the Garmin eTrex Vista for grouse hunting in Michigan. It constantly lost signal which made my route very hard to see. I would not recommend this GPS. I have a four year old Garmin that works much better. |
