Product Description

The iPod has helped revolutionize the way people store and listen to music, but it's not particularly car friendly. Unless your car stereo includes a cassette deck (increasingly rare) or an auxiliary input (more common among newer stereos) combined with the appropriate adapter, you simply haven't had the means to play your extensive iPod library through your car speakers. Several companies, however, have sought to fill this void by releasing a product called an FM transmitter, which broadcasts iPod tunes through FM airwaves. Griffin Technology is among the category leaders with its iTrip, a discreet little device that fits unobtrusively on top of any iPod model with a dock connector, including the iPod mini. The iTrip isn't confined to car stereos--it plays on almost any FM radio--but because most home stereos and boomboxes have auxiliary inputs, it's most popular as a car accessory.

Customer Reviews

Decent

The FM transmitter works fairly well. The problem with it is that if you driving between cities, the station you have it set to often gives out and then you are forced to change the station it is transmitting on, which if you're driving alone is not exactly easy. This is a problem with FM transmitters in general, though it may be true that better ones will hold the signal through more interference. Works fine within a city.

Essential Accessory for Music Enthusiasts Who Travel

The iTrip has proved to be a valuable accessory to my iPod. I love music & in genres that you don't ordinarily find on commercial radio. I love the blues & hard rock from my younger days. The iTrip allows me to listen to what I want even on short trips in the car. For the most part, the iTrip serves its purpose quite well. The only reason I bumped the review down from a 5 to a 4 is a tendency for the stereo signal to break up every now and then, causing a bit of static. Otherwise, the iTrip is very reliable and seems to function quite well. Due to where I live, the radio signals change depending on the weather and the iTrip is easy enough to shift from one station to the next. I think it is an essential iPod accessory for those music enthusiasts who have to travel & don't have the money for a satellite radio subscription.

unreliable

I bought an itrip for my ipod about 10 months ago. I really didn't use it very much. When I did, it seemed to work okay at best. The other day I tried it and it didn't work at all. The light lit up but that was it. It gave out no signal what so ever. I tried everything I could think of, nothing worked. I went to the electronics store where I got it and they told me that they had had a lot of complaints on it so they had stopped carrying it a few months earlier. I got a monster made device which charges the ipod while you are using it in your car. Much better. My advice to all is to stay away from this semi unreliable (at best) device which is ready to die at any time!
