been there - done that
i played it once when it first came out about 10 yrs ago.....back then it was top of the line technology...if you never played the myst series , you should give it a whirl, just pay close attention to system compatibility , every computer is NOT the same. the myst series requires a moderate level of pataince and cleverness. it seems as the games evolved, so did the hint books....thats a shame. a game should stand alone WITHOUT the need for spoon fed directions.
NOT compatible with XP DVD burner/drive
I wouldn't know if the game is any good, it won't play on my DVD drive. I place it in the drive but it keeps trying to read my CD drive DUH (it's in DVD format NOT CD format)! UBI got the genius idea to block DVD burners and as a result I can't play it. And guess what?? I'm out $40. Thanks a lot UBI. I will never buy from them again.
For engineering eyes only
I purchased the Myst series because it was recommended by a friend of mine that's an airline pilot who is also heavy into gaming. The trouble is, he's an engineer type and a combat gamer rather than an adventure gamer, so I don't think he's the person to recommend a game like this. After playing it, neither am I.
Unfortunately, I played this game after The Longest Journey which was great. I was looking for another adventure story I could really sink my teeth into, complete with characters that were humorous and compelling. Myst is not this type of game.
Basically, there is little to no character interaction. The story takes place in four "ages" that you figure out how to travel to in the first part of the game. You find yourself pointing and clicking at everything in order to get something to move. There is no inventory, just "things" you interact with, trying to figure out how they work. So, if you're an engineer type that likes to tinker around with things, this is the game for you. On the other hand, if you like character interaction and humorous events, don't buy this game.
I didn't finish this game, because I got bored with pointing and clicking on everything. I plan to finish it someday, along with Riven and Exile that are included in this package, but I will have to be in an "engineering" frame of mind.
