The DVP642 is not only a high-end progressive-scan DVD player equipped to offer scintillating images on high-definition and HD-ready TVs, it's a tech-savvy player that spins your MP3- and JPEG-encoded recordable CDs (as well as Kodak's and Fuji's variants of the same) and CDs loaded with MPEG-4 and DivX video (3.11, 4.x, and 5.x files), perfect for viewing Internet-sourced content in your home theater. Want more? The player also converts Region 1/All Region PAL-formatted discs (the video standard in Europe) for viewing on standard NTSC televisions (and vice-versa, if only for video CDs).

Customer Reviews

Philips DVP642 - Great Player @ a Great Price

I Love this DVD player.
It plays everything I've put in it.
For example, an AVI file that I burnt of Underworld and a VCD that I had of Underworld Evolution. It also plays audio DVD's (as MP3's).Plus, you can make it ignore region codes.
That being said.....
the remote could be laid out better. I am forever hitting chapter forward by accident, then having to skip back and fast forward to where I was in the movie.
AND...
the menu for displaying a directory on a burnt disc with multiple files only allows eleven characters, ie.12345678901.
This may not be a problem for everyone, but if you burn an MP3 DVD with lots of files with similar names you can't tell which one is which unless you play the file.
ALSO.....
lots of the reviews I've read on the Philips DVP642 advise that the player breaks easily. I haven't had a problem.... yet.
I suggest buying the ten dollar one year extended warranty, just in case.
Lastly....
this DVD player is firmware upgradeable (if you don't know what that means this won't matter to you anyway), but Philips doesn't provide updates very often, at least for this model.
All in all though, I would recommend this player to friends and plan on buying another one myself, unless I find a better model than this one.

Plays anything I have tried so far :)

Like the title says it has played anyhting I have tried so far. It plays dvds exalent and plays divx pretty good (pixilated). For the price you cant beat it, looks good too.

Amazing DVD player for an AMAZING price

Simply put if you download all your favorite old TV shows, movies, etc. you need to have this player. With DivX capabilities go ahead and burn away! The firmware is updated and improves everything from minor bugs to the zoom that most complaints are about.

I highly recommend this DVD player if you are within a tight budget and still looking for quality. After all it is a Phillips and I've always had good luck with their products. :)
