| Product Description The iPod mini has helped revolutionize the way people store and listen to music, but it's not particularly car-friendly. Unless your car stereo includes a cassette deck (increasingly rare) or an auxiliary input (more common among newer stereos) combined with the appropriate adapter, you simply haven't had the means to play your extensive iPod library through your car's speakers. Several companies, however, have sought to fill this void by releasing a product called an FM transmitter, which broadcasts iPod tunes via the FM airwaves. Griffin Technology is among the category leaders with its iTrip mini, a discreet little device that fits unobtrusively on top of the iPod mini. The iTrip mini isn't confined to car stereos--it plays on almost any FM radio--but because most home stereos and boomboxes have auxiliary inputs, it's most popular as a car accessory. |

Best look elsewhere... The concept behind this product is really quite brilliant. Since FM radios are so incorporated into our lives the idea of using your ipod with any one of them is a good one.
Unfortunately, it simply does not work. I bought this and tested it on three radios: the stereo receiver in my home, a small battery-operated radio in my office and the radio in my car. I simply could never get a clear signal on any one of them. I was able to hear what was playing, but the airwaves are too crowded and distort any signal the itrip can put out. I tried different times of day as well. I even took it out on the open highway beyond any city and still the had same result.
I have also spoken to others with the same problems so it is not the particular itrip that I bought that is not working.
I for one hope they figure this out since it is such a great idea. But until then, don't waste your money. If you are determined to try one go to ebay where they sell for about $5 now.
Just my two cents. : >
Great, but not for LA My parents got me one of these for Christmas. It worked great where they live in Kansas. However, when I got back home to Los Angeles I discovered that it was nearly useless. The problem - there are just too many radio stations in the LA area, which means that there aren't any clear channels for your itrip to broadcast on. I even downloaded Griffin's program that recommends the "best" stations to use in your area. For the entire LA area there are 3 recommended stations, while in most other areas there easily 15-20 at least. Using the recommended stations, the itrip will work ok in my apartment. However, driving in the car the itrip simply doesn't broadcast a strong enough signal. I ended up going back to my casette adapter, which is a much better solution if your car stereo has a tape player.
Worst product ever? I had an ipod for about a year that I use to listen to in my truck using a cassette adapter. Everything was peachy until I bought a new car that didn't have a cassette player. So, I made the mistake of buying the iTrip to compensate. At first, the iTrip seemed to work OK, but it sometimes needed to be reset. That was on the first day. On the second day the iTrip was even more sensitive and required more resetting. On the third day it had to be reset every other second and refused to work in some parts of town. Then it just quit working all together. In a misguided belief it wasn't connected properly, I pushed down on the top of the iTrip gently exploiting a weakness I wasn't aware of in my ipod mini's headphone jack. It took me a few days to realize that my iPod was now broke and pretty much useless to me. So, not only did the iTrip not work, it caused my $250 dollar iPod to brake just as it's warranty ran out. Avoid the iTrip and the iPod like the plague. |
