Nice scanner
This is a nice scanner. I spent quite a few hours scanning photo after photo into my computer, and this scanner scans fast and the photos have a good quality.
Inpossible to install
The scanner software does not allow direct installation. Files have to be located by hand and opened but the software doesn't stipulate which files or where they are. After 30 minutes on hold Canon Tech Support spent ONE HOUR on the phone with me because the support person had to search for the information necessary to complete the installation. Once the scanner was installed I made a test print of a photo. The Scanner preview showed a clear, well defined image, but printed out something hideous. This is the same Canon printer that, two days before, had been printing beautiful pictures.
If it ever becomes necessary to reinstall the scanner software it will not be possible for me to do it again without tech support.
Speed and Simplicity of CanoScan 4200F
This scanner produces a good copy, is easy to use and has buttons on the device itself. The light stayed on continuiously, but an e mail to the company gave us the needed information to put it to "sleep". We bought this primarily to scan 35mm slides into our computer. It only does two slides at a time and it takes about 3 minutes to get the lamp "hot" or "bright" enough to scan the slides. Not having had any experience with any other scanner that can process slides, we have no idea if that is a typical time. Overall, this scanner is more than adequate when one considers it modest price.
