Sound awful - perplexed by the glowing reviews I bought these speakers less than a month ago and after trying really hard to like them for a couple of weeks, I promptly shipped them back to Amazon. I like logitech products (their mice are second to none) and the 5500 is definitely an interesting concept but the execution is poor. Not only is the subwoofer huge and heavy (not necessarily a bad thing) but it sounds boomy and is all over the place - one of the worst subwoofers I've heard. The satellites sound tinny and they do not blend with the subwoofer and there's a huge hole where the midrage should be. I could go on and on, but let me sum it up: If you care about sound quality, save your money and get something else. I gave them two stars because I liked the whole design concept but that's about all I could find positive about them.
The sound Having just bought this speaker system, I wanted to chime in with a review. I am using a Creative Audigy Platinum 2 series sound card, and using the fiber optic out to connect to the speakers.
In a word, movies sound AWESOME. Games sound AWESOME. For these applications I fully and wholeheartedly recommend these speakers. However, if your main use for these speakers is listening to music, I would recommend something else. These speakers really do not produce a natural sound for music. I have tried tweaking the setting to the point of frustration, but to no avail. The midrange is almost non-existant. The bass is either not there or overpowering. Yes, yes, as I said, I have messed with ALL the settings ad nauseum (including adjusting the sub volume). In general, the "stereo" setting produces a very weak sound for music. The "stereo x 2" setting is a little better, but still suffers from the problems I mentioned. The "5.1 music" setting is hopeless.
I am using the speakers in a fairly large room, so perhaps that is part of the problem, but I doubt it. As I said, movies and games still sound awesome.
Well, overall, I do not regret shelling out the cash for these speakers. But caveat emptor - You may be better of with a good 2.1 speaker system if you mainly want speakers for listening to music.
No weak Link here! I bought the Z-5500's at the same time that I was revamping my whole main PC/Gaming rig. At the same time I also purchased a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro sound card, a Dell 2405FPW 24" HD LCD monitor, and Monster THX cables all the way around. If you are going to want to get the absolute MOST you can get out of these speakers buy the Monster S 1000 Ultra THX speaker cables for them. Get a 20' runs with gold wire ends at their ends. LOL, The cables weigh more than the speakers so anchor your cables right before the satelites (speakers), so they won't pull over the speakers. The speakers connectors on back are vertical and the cables are heavy so that is a small problem. The center channel speaker is a horizontal connection and it's a better fit. You'll see what I mean when you attach them. Follow a few simple steps to make installation a better process. Let the cables warm up stretched out flat, you can even use a blow dryer to get them warm so you can stretch them out flat after being bagged up coiled. Then attach each cable to the back of the power woofer, then to each speaker. The sound is incredable. Lower bass, awesome mid-range less harsh highs. If you wanna really see some digital tests with these install Winamp for free, go to "DIfm" radio streams on the internet go to the listen now tab, click on Chill out ambient station, click on 96k listen now with winamp. You'll be in heaven. The DVD-A feature in Creatives' X-fi Elite Pro are a good way to test these speakers as well, but that's a different review! |
