Customer Reviews

The T5 works great in many ways

I owned the original Palm Pilot and have been a Palm fan ever since. I've had the T5 for about 3 months, and per the recommendations of Brighthand forum members, I updated the firmware to Version 1.1 (found on the Palm site).

So far, I can only say good things about the T5. The ability to load short movie clips on the device as well as share pictures from my laptop's photo library is simply cool. The unit works great with various aftermarket software, e.g., 3nity(password database), DateBk5 and Launcher X. I can also use the IR feature to wirelessly print memo's on my Canon i80 printer.

The Best feature, IMO, is Bluetooth. The T5 Bluetooth works great with the MarkSpace/MissingSync application. I can easily share the internet through my computer's DSL (not necessary, but fun !) and to sync to my address book and calendar (one less cable is nice).

Just recently, I started to use the device as a navigation system in my car, using a Bluetooth GPS receiver (Globalsat BT-338) and Mapopolis mapping software, it makes the T5 all the more valuable and it works flawlessly.

Using Bluetooth and my Moto v551, the T5 can also be used to check e-mail. Since I can't access personal e-mail at my work, I can use the T5 to send and receive messages and, browse the internet anywhere I have my phone (no WiFi needed).

It is RICH in features, the processing speed is great, and I'm just beginning to take advantage of the additional space.

Palm still delivers in my book.

Don't buy this unless...

Don't buy this unless you're like me and won't believe anything until you experience it for yourself. This PALM is DEFECTIVE IN DESIGN. I've used PALMs since 1999, starting with PALM VII. After purchasing this PALM (and I only wanted it as a PDA, no games or bluetooth telephone devices), I was disappointed. The biggest problem I had was the device not recognizing keystrokes. Either it didn't recognize them at all and the screen remained blank, or it printed weird characters instead of those you were actually writing. The flash drive concept is great, but unlike PALM states, the T5 is not recognized as a flash drive on all computers that have USB ports. (My PNY-USB flash drive works on both my home and work desktop, but the PALM T5 wouldn't work on my work desktop -- but are recent HP computers). I only had to reset the T5 once, and I think that was due to a conflict with 3rd party software I tried to install. I didn't try using it for games or with bluetooth, which is why I gave it a 2. The T5 has promise, but PALM should be ashamed for putting it on the market without fixing the bugs (or not pulling it from the market after hearing its loyal customers denounce it repeately for the same defects). On a brighter note, I purchased the TREO 650 as a replacement for the T5 and I think it's great, except you have to buy all new accessories (docking stations, cables, etc.) -- when it's time to upgrade my TREO 650, I'll look at other vendor products since PALM is starting to let its loyals down with poorly designed devices like the T5 and incompatible accessories. Good luck to all in your PDA search...

Buggy & dreadful technical support

Over the years (I have owned Palm devices for 6-7 years), the devices have become less stable. The problem is exacerbated by Palm including some software that, unbelieveably, crashes the system or doesn't work properly with it.

This problem is magnified by how lousy technical support has become. You will not speak to an American if you call. You will talk to a human, but because the human you are speaking to is reading off a script, you might as well be "talking" to a voice recognition system.

I am a serious high-tech type, and I've always used Palm Pilots. But the next handheld I get will almost certainly be based on a Microsoft OS. This despite the the fact that there are far more applications for the Palm OS, and many of the applications are judged superior to the corresponding ones for a Microsoft OS.
