Isolation: Good...Sound: Could be better

If you are looking for a pair of headphones that can block outside sound without paying a lot for it, the Sony EX71s are one of your best bets. They accomplish this task wonderfully. The silicone ear inserts make this possible by focusing the sound directly into the ear canal and not allowing sound to escape. This is due to the silicone forming directly to the inner ear. In short, sound is improved, comfort is elevated (unlike the horrible iPod stock buds, for example) and some outside isolation is achieved. These are able to block out TVs, voices, even city traffic, to an extent. They really are a bargain when it comes to this quality. Fitting may take some getting used to for those that are not familiar with listening devises that insert directly into the ear. For most, though, once the proper "seal" is acheived, the Sony EX71s are able to block a great deal of external noise. Be aware, though, that I am only referring these earphones to those that consider the sound "cancelling" property more important than music quality. If this is not you, strive a bit higher. Look for a pair that can do both adequately

Sound-wise, it IS much better than the iPod headphones and your basic cheap pair, as well. I say go for the higher, more professional ones, though. If you love bass, these were made with you in mind. Many other reviewers have noticed this and I agree with them. The lows constantly overpower the mids and the highs. I am not a "basshead" so that is a major con for me off the bat. As a result, the singing in any given song always seems to be recessed, obviously, taking away from it immensely.

On on a positive note, though, the mids (which commonly consist of the singing and the "metronome" beat that controls the tempo of a song) are clear, for the most part.

Treble is almost always reduced to the complete background of a song. Any high pitched instrument or sound seems completely lost in the music. Very bad for someone who likes a singer with a high register or for a person who enjoys hearing the entire spectrum of an orchestra.

Overall, the sound that comes from these Sonys can be described as "being played from the room next to you". Simply put, it is all a little muddy. The mids, as in the singing and the basic "beat" of the song, can be made out. The bass, though, is somewhat uncontrolled and overpowering, taking over the song. Meanwhile, treble can barely be heard or is, at the very least, recessed, because of the bass. Basically, I would go for a better headphone in order to get the proper "punch" of the bass, crystal-clear mids, and crisp but discernable highs. The Sony EX71s are better than your basic headphone (with the isolation and, somewhat, improved sound) but you can do better still.

Good headphones, terrible cord, zero customer service

I bought these after trying a friend's. When I got them, the sound difference from the APPLE earbuds was absolutely tremendous and I was 100% satisfied. Price to quality ratio was great. Then after a couple months I noticed that the rubber casing began to wear in certain places and then deteriorate and peel off entirely. This spread throughout the length of the headphones, exposing wire and leaving a black residue when I touched it. Apparently this is not unusual for this product. So i called big powerful Sony, thinking they would stand behind their product. The best they could do??? For another 30 bucks they would send me a refurbished comparable set. I laughed in the "service" reps ear and asked for a complaint form. I bought electrical tape and have been making bandages since. I'd like new Sony's but don't' trust them anymore. Might need to splurge for some Shurs.

Perfect for iPod Shuffle!

I bought these specifically because of the short cord. I wear my Shuffle around my neck and get annoyed by the 4 and 5 foot cords that I must coil up. The clump of wire ends up swinging and hitting my chest making the "microphone effect" much worse. They Sony's cord is just about perfect for the Shuffle.

I used to use Etymotic ER-6s, and I would still be using them if not for the above cord problems. They Ety's have superior durability and sound, but the cord length was too much of an annoyance to put up with.

I use them almost every day at the gym. I put in heavy cardio work and sweat a lot (I mean A LOT!). The Sony Fontopias last me for about a year (based on the current set that is falling apart). I would say that my use is more abusive than most users (3-6 days at the gym per week). I figure it costs me $0.20 a day to use these.

The sound is very good. Much, much better than the stock iPod earbuds, but not as good as the Etys. I hate that Apple earbuds. My ears hurt after wearing them for a few workouts.

I would give them 5 stars if not for the lack of durability. I accept the failure because I believe I put a heavy burden on my earphones given their almost daily gym use and my prolific sweating. But even the Etys need to have the filters replaced about evry six months, so there is no perfect solution (at least for me).
