fragile device
I did like the performance, good battery life and size but it did not hold up well. I had it replaced once under warrenty and it only lasted another 6 months after that. Now it is not able to connect to a computer, freezes up sometimes and at other times just stops working. Tried a firmware update and that made things worse.
Next time I will try another brand, not Creative
Quite possibly the perfect little mp3 player
I purchased the Muvo TX FM after getting into the mp3 player arena with an MPIO FL100. The latter unit wasn't bad, but I began to sorely miss some of the features that are so readily available on the Muvo. By far, the most appealing feature of the Muvo is its direct-connect USB port. There are no cables to lose, and the unit connects flawlessly to both my new laptop and my ancient Dell desktop that's still running WindowsME. I have yet to install any software for it, as the player supports drag & drop file transfer. Transfer of purchased mp3s with Digital Rights Management licences is nicely supported by both MusicMatch and by Windows Media Player. One of the biggest advantages to this design is that the flash drive part of the unit is powered by the USB port, and not the battery pack, when it is connected to the computer. You can take your time browsing through your music collection and not have to worry that the battery will be dead by the time you finally start uploading tracks.
It is true that getting files to play in a specified order is a bit tricky (see the wonderful review at the top of this section for how to do that), but the folks at Creative have loaded the Muvo with so many play-order options that it hasn't been much of an issue. Shuffle play is available for individual folders or the entire drive, as is the repeat function. I particularly like the ability to delete a track from within the unit. Did you upload a new album only to find out later that you can't stand two of the songs? You can delete them right on the player and save yourself from having to manually skip over them each time they come on.
The Muvo won't display playlists of each folder, but it will let you scroll through a list of the folders (showing the title of each). This feature can be easily accessed from the "scroll wheel" (actually a ratcheting joystick) - it remembers the last function you used, so if you were on "Skip folders" the last time the function menu was accssed, that's what will come up again with one press of a button. Other functions available on this menu include the hold function, equalizer, general settings, radio and voice recorder.
My only complaint about this unit is that there is no easy way to turn on the backlight just to see what song is playing. The display is fairly small, and is hard to read in dim light. Since the player spends about 90% of the time in my pocket when it's on, however, its something I can live with.
I find the Muvo is perfect in tandem with my laptop, which carries the majority of the mp3s in my music collection. Since the direct USB connector and the 1 GB flash memory make it a breeze to swap out files, its almost like carrying around a 6 GB hard drive player thats the size of a cigarette lighter. The Muvo is a great little unit and highly recommended.
