What can I say? Third PB in 6 months, all 12", same thing except this last one came with Superdrive and 80 GB, great, no dead pixels, no strange noises, works fine, only gripe I have with mine the screen has a very slight reddish hue to it with the Adobe 1998 RGB, with the other Powerbooks it was right on.
Total Satisfaction This is by far the best computer I have ever owned or worked on. I purchased my powerbook in July 2005 from the Apple store and absolutely love it. Being a former PC user, I was a bit uncertain of converting. At the time, I had a job change which required a notebook, so I naturally looked at Windows-based notebooks. I purchased a top-of-the-line Windows-based notebook and had nothing but problems, so I returned it within a week and trepidatiously looked at macs. I researched them on Amazon and then talked to the techs at Apple. The information presented suggested that the typical programming problems experienced with PC's were rare with macs, that viruses didn't cause the kind of problems that PC users experience, that they were intuitively designed and much easier to use than PC's, and that they were overall more reliable. After 6 months of constant use, I can say that everything I was told is true, and what a relief that is!
I am not a computer tech, so I won't even attempt the specifics that I am sure other reviewers are able to provide. However, I am a musician (and therefore use complex software programs for notation) and do a great deal of administrative work and can highly recommend this machine. The 12" screen is not at all too small, as I originally feared. The dock is an extremely helpful feature and all the interfacing is logical and very user-friendly. The computer comes with iLife, which includes iTunes (a great program). I purchased Windows Office because I needed Word (for work) and Excel and it has been a great addition and runs much more fluently than on a PC. It's plenty fast and powerful. The physical package is also very appealing. It's light and easy to handle, but very substantial, easy to open, and looks very sleek.
One review mentioned an issue with overheating, but I have not had any problems with this. In fact, I use it on my lap all the time in complete comfort. Another review mentioned low battery life, but I generally get at least 4 hours, usually close to 5 out of it.
I highly recommend this notebook to anyone who is looking for reliability and ease of use, and to all who want to invest in a solid piece of equipment, rather than the latest flash (although it offers that too). In fact, I've been so happy that my husband, after borrowing mine all the time, finally bought one himself! Be prepared though, if you convert, you may find yourself as zealous as the rest of us.
Powerfull but it's too hot I bought the powerbook here on Amazon on December the 1st 2005. I opened the box and powered up the machine. It is so beatiful and fast. 1.5 GHz PowerPC is enough for all applications. I used for about 15 minutes, and my left palm rest was getting warm and warmer. At one point, it was so hot. And after that, the fan started to run. It's loud and distracted me. The hot on my left palm rest started to spread out to the whole machine. It is because of the case is made out of alumunium alloy. I called Apple, and they said it is a defective item, i returned it back to amazon and refunded my money. I checked on lots of reviews and forums, the have this problems for quite long time. And one of the reasons why Apple decided to switch to Intel Processor is because of this problem. PowerPC chips are powerful and consume lots of energy, and definately will generate more heat. The chips are not suitable for small devices like laptops. This doesn't apply to PowerMac or iMac though. Even though those machines will generate heat, but users wont feel it. It is because we wont touch the CPU to do our works right. We just need to touch the keyboard and mouse. But for laptops, we have to touch its surface to use it. I would say just wait for the MacIntel to come and we will have the best experience for the best operating system in the world. If you guys wanna buy PowerMac or iMac, i may say go for the best. PowerPC on PowerMac and iMac is so fast and powerfull. We wont regret our purchase. |
