Great but expensive fees!
We purchase the roadmate760 in December based on its maps for US and Europe primarly; it came recommended for this functionality. As we travel to europe quite often we saw a real plus on this. It comes loaded with NA and canada, maps, and for a fee, Euro maps can be unlocked. Correct! However, it would be worth pointing out to potential buyers who wish maps for both continents, that the extra masp fee is actually an extra 249.00$. This bumps ups the cost quite a bit, for this unit. Overall we are satisfied so far.
Outstanding Performace!
I've had my Magellan Roadmate 760 for only a couple weeks, but I absolutely love it. I'm planning a roadtrip to Reno next month, and I can't wait to use it along the route. I did alot of research for about a month on all the automotive nagivation systems on the market, and finally opted for this one, and I'm glad I did. Right out of the box, I plugged mounted it, plugged it in, and had it powered on in less than 5 minutes. Initially it said I was in San Francisco, CA. I wasn't, I was in Oregon. But after reading that the initial turn on would take a few minutes to capture satelite signal, I didn't stress to much about it. Sure enough, in about 1 minute, the Magellan had pinpointed my exact location. If you're thinking about getting a navigational GPS for your car, I highly recommend this one.
PROS: During route guidance, the GPS will tell you where to go, using street names, in addition, it will show you, as you get close, it will name the next street, tell you what direction to turn, how far away your next manuever is, and will chime right before you make your turn. I doubt anyone would be able to get lost with this unit. In addition, if you make a wrong turn, or have have to take a different route due to road closures, construction, traffic, and accident, or anything, the 760 will recognize you've turned off the guidance route in about 10 seconds, and reroute you. No matter where you turn, it will route you to where you want to go. An Amazing unit!
CONS: I don't like the windshield mount, it seems a bit weak, and the unit wiggles around while I drive. I have a radar detector on the windshield, so it seems like I have to many things mounted to the inside of my windshield. I plan on getting the dash mount to fix this problem. Also, there are certain newer roads that I have noticed are not in the GPS. My house for example. I was still able to add it, and put my own POI icon (Point of interest) but there's no road leading up to my house. I'm told that Magellan will come out with updates periodically that should correct the problem. Not a big deal for me, I live out in the boonies. I haven't noticed a problem with any of the road data in town or in large cities. The only other thing I didn't like about it was the price. It's hard to want to plop down this much cash on something. That's why I researched these units for a long time before buying it. I don't see them coming down in price anytime soon, and they're all around the same price.
Overall: I'm glad I went with the Magellan. It's extremely easy to use, and very helpful. I can route to a specific location, find phone numbers for hotels near by, route to them. Say goodbye to the Road Atlas, this thing does it all, and I don't have to take my eyes off the road, because it will tell me what to do next. Even if I stop for gas, when I turn the car back on, it will ask me if I want to resume my route to my destination.
Magellan RoadMate Delivers
I have been using my Magellan RoadMate for a couple of weeks now and am very pleased with it. It is quite easy to use. Entering names and addresses is simple and straightforward. I also like the option of being able to save a location once I have driven to it in those cases where I hadn't entered the address previously. The display is in color and well backlit so it is very easy to see even after dark. The display shows the name of the street or road at which your next turn or exit takes place as well as the name of the one you are on. A very pleasant voice announces how far it is to your next turn and a chime rings when you get to that intersection. There are built in addresses for restaurants, theaters, etc. so you can find the best route to them without having the address handy.
My only complaint is that when I select "Least Use of Freeways" and am taking one of my back roads, it keeps routing me to the nearest freeway entrance. If I continue along the way I usually go, I am told to make a legal U-turn as soon as possible. Once I have ignored that direction, it calculates a new route from where I am. I don't understand why it wants to direct me to the freeway when there are a number of other roads that lead to the destination. However, if I were traveling in an area with which I am not familiar, it would be fine to follow the directions given and use the freeway. I would like to see this expanded in newer versions of the software, however, for those of us who really prefer to take our time and see lovely homes, trees, shrubs, flowers, etc. instead of a stream of vehicles going 70 miles per hour and rows of commercial buildings.
