Beats the crap out of intel

It has a PowerPc. I don't care what Jobs says PowerPC>intel. No further questions.

iMac G5 3rd generation is well worth the money

Hi folks,

I give this product 4.5 stars, and with bozos like the previous poster who review when they don't even own the product, I feel rounding up to 5 stars is justified.

I have used macs for over 20 years, but this is the first new mac I've purchased for personal use. Like others, I had doubts whether mac hardware was going to survive the mismanagement of the mid 90's. This purchase represents my belief that it will.

I have no complaints about the design or included hardware and software, which is considerable. The hardware is beautiful and I'm happy to have it in my family room. From a software side, Apple's strength is bundling compatible software that really works together. iPhoto is a more complete program and lives up to the hype, finally.

The fan noise is very quiet, and I downloaded a Tiger widget to monitor temperature (an issue in earlier generations iMac G5's) and the temp goes from 44 C up to 65 C. I think that is a reasonable temp range, and the fan stays at a very reasonable, quiet level. The only time I hear it is when the house is dead quiet.

I have it in my living room, precisely because of Front Row and because my kids love the Photo Booth option. I haven't heard them laugh together as much as when they tinker with the effects.

Haven't tried iSight with video conferencing, but will soon I'm sure. The built in camera is definitely the wave of the future.

802.11g wireless works just fine with my Netgear router. I've got pcs and macs hooked up both wirelessly and direct connect. Signal strength is maximum.

Front Row is great for parties or family slideshows. Sit back and show movies, pictures, and music from your harddrive.

I'm not a fan of the mighty mouse. I've finally gotten the hang of the right click: you must raise your left click finger so it knows you mean to right click. That's kind of annoying.

I installed an extra 1GB of ram. Strongly recommended for managing large iPhoto and iMovie files.

Screen is great quality. A bit small to completely replace your living room TV, but certainly getting there.

For the mac geeks of the world: all indications are that Classic is not going to be supported on the Intel macs, which is why I picked up one of these discounted at a local apple store. The deal here online seems very good, too. Get one while you can.

Why? Why? Why on Earth?

Cannot they stick to I-pods and junky doo-dads that they make, or at least try to pitch those overpriced LCD panels to nerds? No, they still making this slug of a computer and price it 3 times what it cost to buy comparable Athlon or Pentium systems.
Slow speed. Limited compatibility. Non-existing upgradeability. Parts that are more expensive then other systems.
Who buys this? And why?
If your assessment of this computer is "I've had new MAC for 3 weeks now and I still have no viruses!!! Weee weee" then this is definately a PC for you.
