Wow - A deeply moving game
Truly a soul-touching experience, this is the kind of heady feel-good gaming that will keep you playing for a full day until the wee hours of the morning. Granted that the lifespan of Civ4 is incredibly short-lived, the experience of playing it once is worth the price of the game alone and possibly a PC upgrade (that most will need). Yes it does push even high spec machines, your hardware will want to be in good order to run it and certainly you should at least be using the v1.52 patch (you must download it from the internet) to have a bug free gaming experience (that still has some minor bugs) the fact is that the game is so vast and so big, these minor glitches are easily overlooked once you get into the swing of things.
Spanning some 3000 years between 1000 BC and 2000 AD you go through every civilization from the dawn of early man to the creation of a space station, with Spock (Leonard Nimoy) narrating, you can build worlds that will eventually compete in military campaigns with one another, the volume of historical information, famous quotes and important pieces of history all mash together to the point of having a modern tank squad up against Roman horseback spearmen, it puts the world we live in today into such clear perspective that this is one of the best family friendly games, not to mention game, of all time. Civ4 is truly an astonishingly experience in every sense of the word. You will get a history lesson, see the world in whole new way and have some of the best fun ever. It doesn't get much better than Civ4!
Pros:
- Leonard Nimoy's narration!
- Intellectual Gaming.
- Fantastic world development.
- The best TBS.
Cons:
- Needs patching.
- Requires high system spec.
- Speed freaks lack the patients needed to play the game.
Civilization IV installation problems
During installation process, it prompts me to put Disk 2. After doing so, the system promptly issues a catastrophic error. The installation process then crashes. According to numerous forums on this game, this has happened to many users and the cause is defective disk 2. I am in process of returning/replacing this game but that would take some time. Not a happy camper.
Caveat Emptor
The copy of the game I received would not install. After quite a bit of research, I found that I was having the same problem as many others: the disc 2 that shipped with my copy of the game was defective.
I purchased this game because I have played all of the Civ games and loved them, and it _seemed_ like they had worked out most of the bugs in the game. Apparently, defective disc 2's are the latest problem with Civ 4, and no patch will fix that.
It would have cost 2k Games fifty cents (if that) to send me a replacement disc. Instead, they would rather I return the game and write this bad review on Amazon. Nothing irritates me more than a company that insists on making decisions that are bad for them and their customers. How hard can it be to sell a sequel to one of the most popular and beloved games of all time?
Amazon handled the matter professionally. Instead of making me perform multiple returns, they refunded my money and customer service informed me that due to the widespread problem of defective discs, they are not shipping this title for the moment. I appreciate their honesty and courtesy.
Save yourself the frustration and wait another few months before you even consider buying this title.
